ART (Active Release Techniques®)
This technique's goal is to restore optimal texture, motion, and function of the soft tissue and release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. ART is a soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur?
Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • Aacute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

FMS (Functional Movement Screen)
Discover hidden weaknesses
Prevent injury and promote durability
Build balanced fitness
Magnify your potential

When you start a fitness plan, it's vital to be prepared. Commitment isn't measureable, but physical readiness is. The FMS evaluates whether your body is ready to take on a fitness plan, puts you on the road to genuine wellness, and tracks your progress along the way.

Systematic tool to identify functional asymmetry or major limitation in functional movement patterns. Most of the tests at that time were geared to athletic performance or specific skill performance. We, as a group, felt that the fundamental human movement patterns were being left out of analysis. Research has demonstrated that right-left asymmetries and major limitations can increase injury potential and decrease functional effectiveness. Currently, there is no tool to effectively track substitution and compensations - most test are quantitative and not qualitative in nature. Our attempt to add the Functional Movement Screen to current sports medicine and strength and conditioning practices was an attempt to fulfill a void. We do not feel that the Functional Movement Screen replaces any of the standardized testing methodology currently used. Instead, we feel that it adds another perspective of human movement that could potentially help clarify problems as well as improve performance and resistance to injury.

Trigger Point Work
Trigger points are hypersensitive, tightened areas, known as taut bands, which can occur in any muscle. Trigger points cause pain, tingling, burning, weakness and other symptoms. They have a special property called referred pain. This work was actually developed by Dr. Janet Travell-Orthopedist to President John F. Kennedy and has been an important component of our treatment plans.

Kinesio Tape
Kinesio Tape is a therapeutic procedure using special tape invented by Japanese Chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase, D.C. Jonas Chiropractic offers Kinesio Tape to help support your Chiropractic Adjustment by supporting muscles and joints while removing congestion (swelling) from areas of inflammation. It gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also used for Preventive Maintenance, Edema, and Pain Management. Kinseo Tape is a rehabilitative, therapeutic modality. Our professionals are trained in the use of this new and effective taping which aids in reducing swelling, pain and decrease muscle spasm.

We now offer Kinesiotaping which aids in reducing swelling, pain and decreasing muscle spasm. A 2007 study by the Department of Rehabilitation and the University of Warsaw found that muscle strength increased 54% after 24 hours of use. A recent study published in the Journal of Sports Physical Therapy in July 2008 by the US ARMY found Kineotaping helped increases shoulder range of motion in subjects with rotator cuff tendonitis. Most individuals became aware of its importance at the Olympic games, on the shoulders of Kerry Walsh, or by watching Lance Armstrong's winning Tour de France team. Many amateur and professional skaters and hockey players have found great benefits from its use. The tape is used for pain, weakness and swelling anywhere from the spine to the foot.

Four Major Features of Kinesio Taping:

  • Correct Muscle Function
  • Improve Circulation of Blood/Lymph
  • Reduce Pain
  • Reposition Subluxated Joints

Kinesiotape:

  1. REDUCES PAIN by causing the body to release Endorphins and Encephalons (the body's natural pain relievers).
  2. HELPS ADJUSTMENTS HOLD by gently supporting the area.
  3. REDUCES SWELLING by improving lymphatic flow.
  4. CORRECTS MUSCLE FUNCTION by reducing muscle fatigue and over contraction.

You may have noticed Kinesio Tape on Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh's shoulder or read about Kinesio Tape in Lance Armstrong's, Every Second Counts, where he refers to Kinesio Tape as "Something better than any laser, wrap or electric massager...Special tape that came from Japan and seemed to have special powers. Every morning before the stage, they would tape us up, different parts of our bodies.... George's back, Chechu's knees. Sometimes we'd be so wrapped up in hot-pink tape that we'd look like dolls, a bunch of broken dolls. But the next day the pain disappeared--it was gone."

How Does Kinesio Tape Work?
Conventional athletic tape is designed to restrict the movementt of affected muscles and joints. For this purpose, several layers of tape must be rolled on the affected areas, applying significant pressure and resulting in the obstructuion of the flow of bodily fluids. That is why athletic tape is usually applied before an activity and removed soon there after. On the other hand, Kinesio Taping allows free range of motion in order to allow the body's own muscular system to heal itself biomechanically. The tape itself is very thin and the wave like glue pattern of the tape allows the skin to virtually be lifted from the affected area and gently massages the area during movement allowing for lymph and circulation improvement along with joint stability

"Something better than any laser, wrap, or electric massager... the Tape. It is a special hot-pink athletic tape that came from Japan... The pain disappeared--it was gone."

- Lance Armstrong, "Every Second Counts"
